WardsAuto 10 Best Engines Award List Includes the 2017 Chevy Volt

For the third time since the Volt was introduced to car buyers and enthusiasts, it has won the WardsAuto 10 Best Engines Award. This is also the second year in a row the second generation Volt has been given this prestigious award. According to a press release posted by Chevrolet, the Volt was selected based upon three different reasons:

  1. The Volt provides 53 miles of range using the electricity only.
  2. The Volt’s gasoline engine provides additional high mileage range in between charging.
  3. The Volt is fun to drive and offers sufficient torque with its unique design.

Furthermore, the flexibility provided by the electric-only and gasoline-powered engine delivers a worry-free driving experience car owners can rely on.

While there are other hybrid vehicles that might offer a similar engine/propulsion system, the Volt’s is unparalleled in comparison. The Volt is classified as an EREV (extended range electric vehicle) and incorporates a dual motor drive unit, which delivers 294 lb-ft of torque and features a 1.5-liter gasoline-powered engine for range extension, along with its 18.4 kWh lithium-ion battery powered engine system.

Together, this dual engine propulsion system delivers on average 420 miles of driving range on a full charge and full tank of gas. It is worth noting that, while the electric-only system provides 53 miles of range, when combined with the gasoline extending engine it delivers up to 106 miles per gallon/electric distance!

Compared to other models in this vehicle class, the Volt is the leader. On average, other EREV vehicles deliver around 40 miles on electric-only propulsion before switching over to gasoline to extend the range. In addition, Chevrolet continues to push the development of its electric propulsion systems and hybrid designs to deliver farther distances using less gasoline.

When the Volt was first introduced in December 2010 as a 2011 model, it provided around 35 miles on electric-only propulsion and a combined electric/gasoline range of around 380 miles. Chevrolet’s objective with the second generation Volt was to increase the electric-only range while at the same time increasing the combined range, which it was able to accomplish.

Besides the WardsAuto awards, the Volt has received many other awards, including:

  • The Green Car of the Year Award 2011
  • The North American Car of the Year Award 2011
  • The World Green Car Award 2011
  • The European Car of the Year Award 2012
  • The Green Car of the Year Award 2016

The Volt even received an award in 2009 while still being developed as a concept vehicle: the Green Car Vision Award.
