Since we’re talking about Chevy trucks, here, we’ll get right to what most pickup fans are interested in: the engine. The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD features a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8, which the company says features 90% new parts compared to previous versions. This includes the cranks, rods, pistons, exhaust, and turbo and fuel systems, as well as stronger block and cylinder heads and higher capacity flow for the oil and coolant systems. If you’re not looking for a diesel engine, the 2017 Silverado can also be outfitted with a VortecTM 6.0-ltr. V8.

The end result of these changes is a truck that is both more powerful than its predecessors and more fuel efficient. Obviously, this is not an insignificant accomplishment. The 2017 Silverado HD’s horsepower output has been increased by 12 and the torque increased by 19%, putting it at 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet.

The Silverado’s standard Allison 6-speed automatic transmission has been improved to handle the extra output, including new versions of the output shaft, torque converter, and valve body. On top of all that, the vehicle’s emissions have been reduced by 35%.

What Else Is New?

The engine isn’t the only part of the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD that has been improved. It also includes a functional hood scoop designed to take in cooler air and filter out rain, snow, and debris, which helps improve performance and keep everything under the hood working longer.

Other features include Digital Steering Assist. Along with being able to tow massive loads and trailers, the 2017 Silverado makes towing and hauling easier than ever. This impressive little bit of technology makes steering and handling easier than ever, whether you’re driving with an empty bed or loaded up to full capacity.

Speaking of full capacity, the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD is able to haul and tow a whole lot. Thanks to fully boxed frame rails made from high-strength steel, as well as nine cross members providing lateral support, the Silverado 3500HD has a maximum payload rating of 7,153 pounds.

Other features include the Diesel Exhaust Brake System, which helps reduce the amount of pressure needed to apply to the brake pads and reduces wear and tear; Trailer Sway Control, which detects when the trailer starts to sway and automatically applies the brakes; a trailering camera system that makes blind spots visible and provides a clear view of cargo and trailers; and a fifth-wheel trailer hitch that can be installed at the dealership.
