Chevy is giving its customers what they want, responding to a big demand for Wi-Fi in vehicles by offering an unlimited data plan in new cars sold at Chevrolet dealerships and Chevys already equipped with OnStar 4G LTE hotspots.
GM, Chevy’s parent company, is partnering with AT&T to offer the unlimited data plan, which will cost just $20 per month. Current data plans for OnStar Wi-Fi hotspots on Chevy vehicles cost $10 per month for 1 gigabyte of data, $20 per month for 4 gigabytes of data, and $40 per month for 10 gigabytes of data, so the unlimited plan is a real bargain for Chevy customers.
From now on, the Detroit automaker will offer the $10 per month plan for 1 gigabyte of data, the $20 a month plan for unlimited data, and data passes that allow 20 gigabytes of usage over a year for $150.
About 3.1 million Chevrolet vehicles with OnStar 4G LTE capability are currently on the road. GM says more Chevy vehicles are Wi-Fi capable than any other brand. Demand for Wi-Fi hotspots in automobiles has grown exponentially since Chevy began incorporating them into its vehicles just a few years ago.
According to GM, use of OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspots increased 200 percent, between 2015 and 2016, and the automaker expects even more growth in 2017. GM executives say the unlimited data plan will set fire to an already hot market for Wi-Fi in vehicles.
Wi-Fi hotspots give drivers and passengers access to the internet via smartphones and tablets in their vehicles. Chevy drivers and their passengers can make use of this access in a variety of ways.
For example, a real estate may use his onboard Wi-Fi connection to access company email or contract information stored in the cloud when he’s on-site showing a house to clients. A journalist might use the Wi-Fi hotspot to remotely post stories at breaking news events, allowing her to scoop the competition. Families can use it to stream movies to their kids’ tablets or other mobile devices on road trips.
Last year, Chevy owners and passengers used more than 4.2 million gigabytes of data. They streamed a total of more than 17.5 million hours of video using OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi connections.
The Wi-Fi connections in GM vehicles can support internet connections for up to seven devices. Devices will be able to access the internet through the hotspots at distances of 50 feet away or less.
Chevy isn’t the only GM brand offering unlimited Wi-Fi. Cadillac, Buick, and GMC vehicles will also offer the service. Chevy owners interested in the unlimited data plan should talk to their Chevy dealer for more details.
