Chevy just keeps on winning, chalking up critical accolade after critical accolade as the company’s vehicles finally get the recognition they’re due from the automotive press. Chevrolet recently chalked up another win when its 2018 Colorado ZR2 was named as a finalist for the prestigious Motor Trend Truck of the Year award.
Reviewers for Motor Trend praised the 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2’s off-road capability and on-road handling and also gave kudos to the truck’s new V-6 engine option. Motor Trend reviewers emphasized the utility of the vehicle’s new suspension and Multimatic DSSV dampers for off-roading in their assessment of the vehicle.
The new 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2 is powered by a standard turbodiesel I-4 engine that generates 186 horsepower. A new V6 gas engine that cranks out 308 horsepower is also now available. Reviewers liked the new V6 and a new eight-speed auto transmission coupled with it, saying they added significant power to the vehicle.
Both engines have advantages when it comes to off-roading. The turbodiesel engine generates a lot of torque—375 ft-lb—making it excellent for crawling through rough terrain. The V6 allows the Colorado to build greater speed in off-road environments.
Off-roading performance is aided by wider, tougher bodywork. The Colorado ZR2 has an improved suspension and other alterations that guard the vehicle’s body and make off-roading easier. Indiana truck buyers will love the capability offered by the new Colorado.
The new Colorado ZR2 also has excellent on-road manners. The new vehicle provides a smooth, even ride on pavement and handles well. Both engines offer good acceleration on the road.
The turbodiesel engine is one of the most efficient truck engines, getting 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the open road. The vehicle can tow up to 7,700 lbs. and can haul 1,600 lbs.
The new Colorado ZR2 provides a very comfortable cabin, like most Chevy vehicles. The front seats are well-made and offer plenty of cushioning and support. The cabin is roomy, although the rear is best reserved for children or shorter passengers. There’s a little bit of road noise, but that’s to be expected in a truck.
The Colorado is a very easy truck to get in and out of, and the vehicle has a driving position that’s great, giving drivers plenty of visibility. The Colorado has some neat standard features, including a USB port, Bluetooth, streaming audio, a 4.2-inch display and more.
Reliability & Safety
Chevy Colorado vehicles have earned above-average reliability ratings from J.D. Power and Associates, and 2018 will likely be no exception. The vehicle earned four of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in overall crashworthiness.
Motor Trend tested trucks for the 2018 Truck of the Year award at a proving ground in Yucca, Arizona. At the facility, reviewers performed extensive testing, including towing and off-road tests.
