There’s definitely no shortage of midsize cars when it comes to today’s auto market. Among all these options, only one car won U.S. News’ award for Best Midsize Car for Families, and that’s the 2017 Chevy Malibu. It’s easy to see why, when it is examined alongside other Chevrolet cars. With high safety scores, a cozy, well-apportioned interior, and a lower starting price than most of its competitors, the 2017 Chevy Malibu is a no-brainer for your family.
While not much is changed on the outside, Chevy made some changes under the hood for the 2017 model year. Depending on your trim level and options, you have your choice of two engines. A 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, with a peak horsepower of 160 with 194 ft-lbs of torque, rated for a combined efficiency of 31 miles per gallon, and a turbocharged 2-liter 4-cylinder engine, with an astonishing 250 peak horsepower and 260 ft-lbs of torque, which still manages an impressive efficiency of 26 miles per gallon.
Both engines come wedded to an automatic 9-speed transmission—one that notably shifts cleanly and seamlessly, cycling through or skipping gears as necessary to keep you in the appropriate rev range for either performance or economy, depending on your desire.
While a family sedan may not be the most exciting vehicle out there, the Chevy Malibu proves that it doesn’t have to be boring or under-featured. For starters, the Malibu features a roomy, comfortable interior, one easily able to fit as many as five adult-sized bodies without feeling cramped or uncomfortable. The expansive and spacious trunk will give you more than enough space for everyone’s luggage and gear, as well, even on the longest road trips.
The dashboard also brings Chevy’s latest version of their in-car infotainment system, MyLink. This responsive and feature-packed system not only offers navigation but access to the most common and popular entertainment systems, as well as compatibility with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, giving you the freedom to really make it your own.
Another feature of particular interest to parents, making this a true family sedan, is the Teen Driver mode. One of the Malibu’s keys can be programmed to engage this mode when driving, and a whole lot of restrictions are employed.
For example, the maximum volume of the stereo is limited, and it can’t even be turned on until the driver’s seatbelt is buckled. The maximum speed is limited, as well, and none of the safety features can be disabled. Furthermore, it works with the adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and the lane-keep assist to deliver a report card, of sorts, post-drive, letting you know every time your teen driver did something dangerous.
